Applications

EasyFind

Spotlight is great, but sometimes you need something more specialized. EasyFind finds files and folders by name or content using advanced Boolean operators similar to DEVONthink and DEVONagent, wildcards, and phrases. It does not require indexing, is fast, and uses very little memory. Of course EasyFind doesn't just give you the files, it also shows previews and gives you many other options to work with them. And it's free. Life can be so good.

Alternative: Feel free to have a look at Thomas Tempelmann's Find Any File. In contrast to EasyFind you'll get a hierarchical result list, you can search as "root" user, search after date ranges and file sizes, and save searches and re-run them later.

PhotoStickies

PhotoStickies shows your favorite pictures directly on your desktop, floating and, if you like, borderless. Use pictures from your computer or the Internet. Or webcam, live on your desktop, automatically updated. You can even use PhotoStickies to record webcams or make them your desktop picture.
Click to download.

ThumbsUp

Create thumbnails for your website in seconds with ThumbsUp. Drag them to its icon and it converts them in a batch with the previously set options. Of course ThumbsUp works with all image formats supported by OS X including PDF documents and QuickTime movies. Set desired size, quality, sharpening, and anti-aliasing; scale images by percentage or maximum size.
Click to download.

XMenu

XMenu adds one or more global menus to the right side of the menu bar. They give you access to your preferred applications, folders, documents, files, and text snippets. Launch any application with a single menu choice or insert text snippets into your documents. XMenu is a real app, no hack, no extension. And it's free.

Services

Blueservice

Easily send selected text to Bluetooth–compatible devices directly from your favorite app with a single click. Use BlueService e.g. if your phone is not yet supported by Address Book and its SMS capabilities. For the technophiles: BlueService uses OBEX Object Push or OBEX File Transfer.

CalcService

Enter calculations into any Service-aware app such as TextEdit, Mail, iChat, Safari, Xcode, or any of our apps, and calculate the result with a single keystroke. Append the result to the formula, replace the selected text with the result, or show the result in a panel. Never launch Calculator again if you just need a quick calculation.

WordService

WordService provides a large number of commands for working with selected text:

  • Reformat text paragraphs
  • Clean up tabs, quotes, line endings
  • Remove unwanted text parts
  • Sort lines or paragraphs
  • Change case
  • Shift paragraphs right or left
  • Obscure using Rotate 13
  • Insert date, time, or file path
  • Speak selected text
  • Get text statistics

Extend your favorite text processor, email app, or web browser with all the functions listed above.

What are OS X services?

Services appear in OS X's "Services" sub-menu and act on selected text, pictures, links, or files. They are provided either by the system itself, by third-party applications such as DEVONthink and DEVONagent, or can be installed as separate modules.
