How to Use a Document Window
December 23, 2025 — Jim Neumann

DEVONthink's document windows display a specific document, often opened by double-clicking one in a main window. But, as you continue working in the main window, you may lose track of where a document is. Or, perhaps, you need to move it around, but want to minimize the interruption. Therefore, here are a few handy tricks for handling a document window.
- Open the Tools > Inspectors > Info: Generic inspector. The Location field shows where the item is located. If the document is in deeply nested groups, hover over the icons in the path to slide them out and expose them. Click on an item in the path to open the location in a new main window.
- Open the Tools > Inspectors > AI: See Also inspector. The first item in the Documents section at the bottom is the current document. You will see the location listed under the name. Select the document in the inspector and press Command-R (⌘R) to reveal it in a main window.
- Hover over the document’s title at the top of the window. Next to the title an icon appears, the proxy icon. Command-click it and a pop-up menu shows the document’s location, from the group all the way to the database it’s in. If you click any of those locations, it will be opened in a main window. This also works with many other files on your Mac!
If you need to move the document, you can drag the proxy icon to a different location in a main window. Another option is to select Data > Move To or press Control-Command-M (⌃⌘M) to open the Move To popover. Search for a location, then double-click the desired location to move it. And you can confirm the new location with any of the options listed above.
