Web search reloaded: DEVONagent Express released
Coeur d'Alene (Idaho, USA), May 24, 2011 — DEVONtechnologies, LLC releases a brand new application to the Mac App Store: DEVONagent Express, combining the ease-of-use and ubiquity of Spotlight with the powerful web search technology of DEVONagent.
DEVONagent Express, the latest Mac product from DEVONtechnologies, makes the unique search technology behind DEVONagent available from any app on the Mac and is easy-to-use. Just like Spotlight searches the computer DEVONagent Express searches the web and presents the results directly in its menu.
"We reflected on our own use of web search and found out that there are a number of factors that kept us from doing it right: Contrary to Spotlight the search field of a web browser is only there while surfing the web. And it only searches the selected general-purpose search engine, which is often good but not always the best choice. With DEVONagent Express we put web search to where it belongs — into the menu bar — and powered it with the unique technology that drives all our apps," comments Eric Böhnisch-Volkmann, President of DEVONtechnologies.
DEVONagent Express adds a menu to the right hand side of the menu bar that lets the user choose the best search engine for the job, then type a query, and run the search. The app comes with more than 80 pre-fab plugins that let it talk to all the great search engines and services that people use every day: Google, Bing, Yahoo, YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, Wikipedia, the App Store, and many, many more.
All results are collected and presented directly in the menu, can be previewed when hovering with the mouse over them, dragged to other applications, and opened in the default web browser or in the background. Large thumbnail previews give a first impression of all pages.
Of course all the advanced search operators known from DEVONagent and DEVONthink can be used in Agent mode, too. A faster Express mode directly collects the results from the search engines and presents the results unfiltered. In Agent mode DEVONagent Express also downloads all result pages, filters them, re-ranks them, and presents long text summaries in the pop-overs and, optionally, in the menu.
"The cool thing about DEVONagent Express is that it's always there and that you already know how to use it. Click the menu, enter your search term, and press Return. And when you set its hotkey web search is just one keystroke away. That's how web search should work on the Mac," says Eric Böhnisch-Volkmann.
DEVONagent Express is immediately and exclusively available world-wide on the Mac App Store for US $4.99. DEVONagent 3.0, which is currently in public beta test, will feature a similar menu extra.
