Devonian Times × 2

15. Januar 2015

As you might know our company name comes from the Devonian Period. And so calling our blog Devonian Times was obvious. Just recently a reader pointed us to just another Devonian Times. It collects all kind of information about the Devonian Period. While unfortunately it wasn’t updated since 2006 but you might still find it an interesting read far away from all the technology we’re usually writing about here.

Interesting Idea

8. November 2012

Susan Young at the technologyreview.com:

DNA can be used to store information at a density about a million times greater than your hard drive, report researchers in Science today. George Church of Harvard Medical School and colleagues report that they have written an entire book in DNA, a feat that highlights the recent advances in DNA synthesis and sequencing. Online Backup with Arq and Amazon S3

8. April 2014

Backups are something that every computer user is supposed to do but nobody really enjoys doing it. Apple’s Time Machine makes it a lot easier, at least when you have a second hard disk or a Time Capsule. However, if you’re like me and you don’t want to clutter your desk with yet another piece of hardware you might like Haystack Software's Arq. (mehr)

Today Apple finally released DEVONthink To Go 1.5.4 to the App Store. The maintenance update fixes a few nasty crashes related to the action extension as well as crashes on iOS 5.1.1. About Moderating Comments

5. November 2012

In the last few week we have received two comments on the blog as well as on Facebook that didn’t only criticize our software or business behavior but also directly insulted us as persons. While we usually never moderate comments or threads in our user forum ((/redirect.php?id=principles text: see e.g. our business principles title: Read our business principles)), I did in these cases. So please feel free to discuss our software in our user forum, but please do so in a friendly and fair way. Thank you.

Your Data in the Cloud, Transparent and Free

1. April 2014

Google has dramatically lowered the price for their web storage and so has Amazon.  However, cheap is not free. And free trumps, doesn’t it? Today we’re happy to announce our own cloud service: DEVONglass. Synchronize all your databases transparently between your Macs (and eventually also your iOS devices) completely free-of-cost, no matter how much data you have. To make this service possible we have partnered with governmental institutions in the US and, for our European customers, the UK. Squirrel It!

11. März 2014

As the older among you may already know I cannot resist to sometimes post a nice comment we’ve received from a happy user. Last week the following message reached us:

Doing some work on an SMB server and we are having such difficulty finding anything. We tried bridge, even spotlighting the entire server. This is a Fortune 500 company and me and my boss gave up on IT and started using EasyFind. Just wanted to share my thanks and praise. We have started just saying, “Squirrel It” for short. Personally I would make a mini site off of “Squirrel It” but that’s just me. Thanks for your hard work. (mehr)

OpenMeta, Better Email Archiving, and More

25. Oktober 2012

DEVONthink is a long-time supporter of the OpenMeta standard for exchanging tagged files. With version 2.4.3, that we have released today, we have further improved the OpenMeta support with better handling of file system events and, in DEVONthink Pro and up, AppleScript commands for synchronizing tags between the database and files in the filesystem. If you are building your own automated workflows you can so make sure that tags are not lost when transferring data between DEVONthink and other apps. (mehr)
