Since the very first telephone companies and there is an ongoing struggle between advocates (and adversaries) of open vs. closed systems. Today is the time of the closed systems.
The Apple II was wide open and while the first Mac hardware was the exact opposite you could still do whatever your wanted in software. Even if there were no official hooks for this and that, as long as you knew how to access something there was no one holding you back. (more)
Today we have released maintenance updates for DEVONthink, DEVONnote, DEVONagent, and DEVONsphere Express. The updates add a few new features such as automatic updating of thumbnails of formatted notes and web archives for DEVONthink or support for WordPerfect files for DEVONagent. We have also improved the overall performance of all apps and, of course, fixed the bugs you have notified us of. (more)
Just a quick note that we have just updated our freeware apps EasyFind and XMenu. Personally I like especially XMenu’s new Snippets menu that allows me to store text snippets and URLs and quickly insert them into a new email message or any other text I am writing.
DEVONthink Personal users: You’re not forgotten! As promised last week, we have just released DEVONthink Personal 1.9.9 with all the little enhancements that we had added to DEVONthink Pro in the last months. In addition, we have released DEVONagent 2.1 with a number of really nice features, for example the possibility to access your bookmarks right from the Dock menu and thumbnail tooltips for tabs. Finally, we’ve published maintenance updates for DEVONthink Pro 1.3.1 and DEVONthink Pro Office. Download the new versions here and simply replace your copies with the new ones.
Using the Clip to DEVONthink Safari extension you easily capture web pages to your DEVONthink database with a single click or keystroke. We have today updated the extension for Retina displays and corrected an issue that prevents the current version 1.2.1 from automatically updating itself. If you own a MacBook with Retina display this update is for you! (more)
We all are back from our Christmas holidays and we are already preparing for an exciting 2007! Steve Jobs already gave it an interesting kick-off with the amazing iPhone and with finalizing the transformating of the computer company Apple Computer, Inc. to the electronics ecosystem company Apple, Inc. that had begun years ago with the introduction of the iPod. Well, if it helps the (Mac) OS X market share, then we’re happy with it. And if they open the iPhone for third-party applications, we’ll definitely have a close look at it, promised! ;-)
A few weeks ago Apple announced OS X 10.9 Mavericks and so here’s our first release of DEVONthink and DEVONnote optimized for the upcoming new version of your favorite operating system! But that’s, of course, not enough. DEVONthink 2.6 adds automatic updating of indexed folders, and directly imports references from Bookends and notes from Evernote. (more)
I had the cool chance to meet Science Fiction and Fantasy novel writer Tobias Buckell, who is also a heavy-duty user of DEVONthink. He’s originally born in the Caribbean but now living in the USA. He published his first story in Science Fiction Age magazine in early 2000 and has sold about 20 short stories to anthologies and magazines. In 2005, Tobias’ new novel “Crystal Rain” and his story collection “Tides From The New Worlds” are due to come out. (more)
I n our user forum, via Twitter, and by email quite a few of you are asking us about the future of DEVONthink To Go, the iOS companion to DEVONthink for Mac. I already mentioned that we’re working on a new release and so I want to give you an update on our progress. (more)
DEVONthink and Bookends work nicely together: DEVONthink Pro and up come with a smart template for quickly linking to references in Bookends, accept references dragged over from your collection, and Bookends can store “item links” for any document in DEVONthink. Just recently Sonny Software released Bookends 12 with an exciting set of new features. Check it out! (more)
